John Irving on structuring his stories

Heard this interview on the BBC's radio art's programme Front Row.

John Irving discusses how he constructs his stories, supposedly having to secure the final sentence before doing anything else. What interested me was that he was interested in the pleasure of using isolated story fragments, pieces he didn't always know where they belonged. Sometimes, they would expose characters which would become essential to the story. Descibing one such important character as being one of the last members of the cast to show up.
